Food waste: from the pantry to the conscience

On September 29, 2023, popcorn, soft drink, and the Beeability team on the couch. Movie night.

Our colleague who loves to always be in theme proposed Non morirò di fame by Umberto Spinazzola.

Find yourself on the fringes of society after being a Michelin-starred and appreciated chef. This is what happens to Pier, who rediscovers his passion for cooking in an existential journey into food recovery, specializing in recipes born from leftovers, saving them from waste. A story of redemption and humanity.

And here we are, exactly 100 minutes later, pondering what the impact of food waste is. Well, know that food waste accounts for about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is recognized as one of the most serious paradoxes of the current food production system. For this reason, the European Union has developed a specific strategy called Farm to Fork, included in the key actions of the Green Deal. Of course, we know that having ambitious goals is not enough and that strong and concrete measures are needed to ensure that they can be achieved, but it is definitely an aspect on which we can all act.

Just think that on a weekly basis, we Italians throw away an average of 524.1 grams of food per person, at a total cost of about 10 billion euros each year. Considering the historical moment, high cost of living, and decreasing purchasing power, 9 out of 10 Italians have stated that in the coming months they will make greater efforts to reduce waste at the table.

For example, did you know that numerous companies are adopting different initiatives to combat food waste? Among these, we can mention some important realities such as Too Good To Go, Cameo, Elior, and Babaco Market, just to give a few examples.

To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, it will be necessary to halve food waste by 2030. For example, we just rang our neighbors to invite them to the evening, so all the sweets, prepared in abundance by the hostess, will be appreciated, shared, and not thrown away! Ah, of course, all accompanied by some good music!
